Accountability/Action

Start by sharing your carbon footprint which you created in the previous module. Then make actionable goals for this year. Then each year, share what you did and if you reached/exceeded/fell short of your goal.

If you didn’t make your goal, tell them you are going to do better. If you exceeded your goal, tell them how you are going to raise your goals for next year.

Here is a link to Studio Modine’s 2021 Impact Report to give you some examples. Feel free to do some google searching for more Impact Reports! Non-profits typically do these reports every year and are a good place to look.

I think as business owners, we feel a need to always show up polished and as an expert. What this ends up translating to, is not taking action on any of this. Mostly because we don’t know everything.

And honestly, with impact-driven and sustainable businesses, it’s impossible to know everything or be an expert, and it’s definitely impossible to know everything if we aren’t actually doing anything.

We learn while doing. We make some changes, then as we learn we make more, until it just becomes a way of doing business.

HOMEWORK: Write a blog post (even if you don’t have a blog currently) like it was a year-end impact report. What would you share? Remember, it’s not about winning. It’s about being transparent, building relationships, and being on this journey WITH your audience.
